Me vs. We

In my gain
I am an I
I am me
But in sorrow
I like to be we
We, in pain
We, in shame
There is comfort
in this we
but my greed
forgets the we
when I am on top
the ego in me

  1. Parmis,
Thanks for writing this poem. I like the way you write your truths. You give me more to think about. Nicely written.

I think this issue we all must contend with (“I” and “greed”) has roots in the limitations of our (English) language. We need one word that means I, you, he, she, we, they, universe and all.

This is a reading of a poem attributed to Shams-i Tabrīzī, Rumi’s teacher, Here, it’s translated and read by Coleman Barks.

    All the best,
    Alice
